Passport photo sizes, answered.

What is the most common passport photo size?
35 x 45 mm. Of the 51 countries in this chart, 30 use the 35x45 format, including the UK, the entire Schengen area, India (for some documents), and most of Asia. The notable exceptions are the US square 2x2 (51x51 mm) and Canada's larger 50x70 mm.
Is the US passport photo size the same as other countries?
No. The US uses a 51 x 51 mm square (2 x 2 inches), shared by only a handful of countries. A US photo cannot be reused for a UK, Schengen, or Canadian application; the aspect ratios differ, and cropping an existing print is not allowed by most issuers.
What does the head size requirement mean?
Most countries regulate not just the photo's outer dimensions but how large your head must appear in it, measured from chin to crown. The chart lists each country's allowed range; our photo maker overlays that range on your photo so you can position yourself inside it.
Which background color do I need?
White is the global default, with some countries accepting or requiring off-white, light gray, or light blue. The chart lists the published requirement per country. When in doubt, plain white with no shadows is the safest choice almost everywhere.
Are these sizes official?
The chart is compiled from each country's published government specifications and ICAO Doc 9303 standards, and each spec in our database carries its official source. Rules do change: for anything high-stakes, verify against the issuing authority's page, which is exactly what our US and Canada guides do in detail.
Can I take the photo myself?
Depends on the country. The US officially allows photos taken by a friend or family member; Canada requires a commercial photographer and rejects home prints. Most visa applications worldwide accept self-taken photos that meet the spec. Check the country guide before shooting.
What resolution do I need for printing?
300 DPI is the standard for every country in this chart unless noted otherwise. At 300 DPI a 35x45 mm photo is 413 x 531 pixels and a 2x2 inch photo is 600 x 600 pixels; our tool exports at the correct pixel dimensions automatically.
