Common questions about passport photos.

Which countries does the tool support?
50 countries covering most passport and visa applications worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom, Schengen states (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Poland and more), Canada, Australia, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, South Africa, and others. The picker lists every country alphabetically with a quick search box. If your country uses the ICAO 35×45 mm standard (the majority of nations), pick any neighbour that does and the photo will satisfy your requirement.
Is the tool really free?
Yes. No accounts, no daily caps, no per-photo limit, no watermark. Everything runs in your browser, including the optional background removal step. We never see your photo.
Where do the country dimensions come from?
Each country card links to its authoritative government source (passport office, immigration department, or ICAO Doc 9303 for ICAO-conformant countries). Dimensions are reviewed annually. If you spot an outdated spec, contact us and we will verify and update.
How does background removal work?
The first time you click 'Remove background', a small AI model (the @imgly background removal library, ~40 MB) downloads to your browser and runs entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded. Subsequent runs are instant because the model is cached. The output is a transparent-background image that we composite over your chosen background colour (white, off-white, light blue, light grey, or any custom hex). For passport submissions, most countries require plain white; a few (Germany, France, Switzerland) accept or require light grey.
How do I position the face correctly?
After uploading, drag the photo behind the country frame to slide your face inside the dashed oval guide. The oval is sized to the country's published head-height range (typically chin to crown takes 65-80% of the photo height). Use the zoom slider or mouse wheel to scale. The 'Reset position' button re-centres if you get lost.
What is the difference between the JPEG and PDF downloads?
The JPEG is a single photo at the exact country dimensions and DPI (usually 300 DPI; e.g. a 51 × 51 mm US photo exports at 602 × 602 px). Use it for online passport portals and digital visa applications. The PDF is a 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) print sheet with as many copies of the photo as fit in a grid (typically 4 to 8 depending on the country). Take it to any standard photo lab or print at home on photo paper for physical passport submissions.
Will the photo be accepted by my government?
The dimensions, head positioning, and background colour will meet the official specification. Acceptance depends on additional factors a tool cannot enforce: neutral facial expression, no shadows, no glasses (most countries since 2016), no head covering (unless religious), no smiling teeth shown, eyes open and visible, photo no older than 6 months. Read your country's full guideline before submitting. If your application is rejected, our tool is free to use again.
Can I use a photo from my iPhone?
Yes. The tool accepts HEIC, HEIF, JPG, PNG, and WebP. iPhone HEIC files are decoded in the browser automatically. For best results, take the photo against a plain wall in daylight (window light, not direct sun) with your face squared to the camera, then use this tool to crop and remove the background.
Why does my final JPEG not have EXIF metadata?
We intentionally strip EXIF on output. Passport photos should not carry GPS coordinates, camera model, or capture time, which would expose unnecessary personal information to whichever official reviews the photo. The output JPEG is metadata-free.
Can I use this for a US green card, visa, driver licence, or ID card?
Yes for any photo that follows the US 2 × 2 inch / 51 × 51 mm format. Pick 'United States' in the country picker. The same 51 × 51 mm spec also applies to Indian passport applications.
