How to Make a Picture Smaller on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows

Make a picture smaller in file size or in dimensions on any device. The built-in routes for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, and when each one falls short.

Quick answer: "Smaller" means two different things, and the fix depends on which one you need. If a form or email rejects your photo, you need a smaller file size, which is compression. If the image is too big on screen or in a document, you need smaller dimensions, which is resizing. Every platform has a built-in route: Preview's Adjust Size on Mac, Mail's size prompt on iPhone, Paint's Resize on Windows, and assorted gallery options on Android. They all work, and they all stop short in the same place: none of them can hit an exact target like "under 200 KB". For that, use a compressor that takes a number. Here is each route, with its catch.

First, which "smaller" do you need?

The two kinds of smaller get mixed up constantly, so thirty seconds here saves a wasted round trip.

  • File size is measured in KB or MB and is what upload limits care about. You shrink it by compressing (lowering JPEG quality) or by resizing, since fewer pixels means fewer bytes.
  • Dimensions are measured in pixels and are what layouts care about. A 6000 x 4000 photo dropped into a document or website is oversized no matter how well compressed it is.

The overlap runs one way: resizing always reduces file size, but compression never changes dimensions. If a portal wants both ("maximum 1000 pixels wide and under 500 KB"), resize first, then compress.

On a Mac: Preview

Preview handles both kinds of smaller, and Apple documents the route plainly: open the image and choose Tools, then Adjust Size.

In that dialog you can type a new width or height, pick a preset from the "Fit into" menu, or switch the units to percent. With "Scale proportionally" on, changing one dimension updates the other so the photo does not stretch. That is resizing.

For file size without resizing, use File, then Export, choose JPEG, and drag the Quality slider down. Preview shows the estimated file size under the slider as you move it, which takes the guessing out.

The catch: the estimate is an estimate, and there is no way to ask Preview for "just under 500 KB". You nudge the slider and check.

On an iPhone

The iPhone gives you compression in a few places rather than one obvious tool:

  • Mail is the classic route. Attach a photo to an email and, at sending time, Mail asks whether to send Small, Medium, Large, or Actual Size, with the resulting file size shown next to each. Emailing a photo to yourself with a smaller size selected is a perfectly respectable resize workflow, and people have used it for years.
  • Messages compresses automatically, which is why texted photos arrive lighter than the original. You do not control the amount.
  • Screenshots of a photo produce a smaller PNG at your screen's resolution. Quick, but it strips the photo's metadata and trims quality; treat it as the crude option.

Worth knowing: iPhones already shoot in HEIC, a format that holds JPEG-level quality in roughly half the bytes. If your problem is that a portal rejects the format rather than the size, that is a different fix, covered in our HEIC to JPG converter and in HEIC vs JPG.

The catch on iOS: nothing built in accepts a target number, and Mail's four presets are the whole menu.

On Windows: Paint, not Photos

Here is the part that surprises people. Microsoft's own editing guide for the Photos app lists cropping, rotating, and light and color adjustments, and no resize. If you have been hunting through Photos for a resize button, that is why the hunt goes badly.

The dependable built-in is the one that has been there for decades: Paint. Open the image in Paint, use the Resize control, and choose percentage or pixels. Keep "Maintain aspect ratio" ticked. Then save as JPEG for a photo.

The catch: Paint offers no quality slider on save and no file-size preview, so hitting a byte target is trial and error with even less feedback than Preview gives.

On Android

Android is the least uniform of the four, because manufacturers ship different gallery apps. The routes that exist broadly:

  • Email round trip. Like the iPhone, most Android mail clients offer to shrink large attachments at sending time.
  • The gallery's own resize, where the manufacturer includes one. Samsung's Gallery, for example, tucks a resize option into its editor on many models. Presence and menu location vary by brand and version, so we will not pretend there is one universal path.
  • Google Photos can export a lighter copy through its share flow, though it too offers no explicit size control.

The catch is the same as everywhere else, plus inconsistency: what works on one phone is missing on the next.

When a number matters, none of the above is enough

Every route so far shares one limit: you cannot tell it the answer you need. Portals, on the other hand, speak in numbers: a visa application caps photos at 240 KB, a job board wants under 500 KB, an old forum still insists on 100 KB.

One honest warning that applies to every tool, ours included: extreme targets cost quality. Squeezing a full-resolution photo under 20 KB means aggressive downscaling, and it will look like it. If a form demands both a tiny file and a minimum resolution, those two requirements fight each other, and cropping tighter before compressing is often the only way to satisfy both.

What making a picture smaller does to its metadata

A detail most guides skip: shrinking a photo often quietly rewrites what is inside it. Screenshots carry none of the original photo's EXIF. Mail's resized copies and most compressors keep or strip metadata depending on the tool's choices, not yours. If the photo's date or GPS matters to you, check what survived with an EXIF viewer after processing; if you would rather it did not survive, strip it deliberately with the EXIF remover instead of hoping compression did it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does making a picture smaller reduce its quality? Resizing discards pixels and compression discards detail, so yes, both cost something. At sensible settings the loss is invisible on screens. It becomes visible when you chase very small targets.

Can I make a picture smaller without changing its dimensions? Yes. That is exactly what quality-based compression does: same pixels, fewer bytes. It works brilliantly on JPEGs and barely at all on PNGs, which are already losslessly packed.

Why is my photo still too big after resizing? Check which number the portal is complaining about. If it wants under 500 KB and your resized photo is a PNG, the format is the problem; export as JPEG. If it wants smaller dimensions, no amount of compression helps.

What is the smallest a photo can reasonably go? Depends on the pixels. As a rule of thumb from running a target-size compressor: a photo can usually reach 100 to 200 KB at acceptable quality, while 20 to 50 KB targets force visible downscaling. Documents and graphics compress much further than photos.

Bottom line

Work out whether you need fewer bytes or fewer pixels, reach for the built-in route on your platform (Adjust Size in Preview, Mail's size prompt on iPhone, Paint's Resize on Windows), and switch to a target-size compressor the moment a form gives you a number, because the built-ins cannot aim. Then glance at the result once at full size. Smaller is only a win if the picture still does its job.
